Make Your Own Fabric Softener

OK,  I posted earlier about how to make your own laundry detergent, well I though I could tell you how to make your own fabric softener.  When you buy fabric softener from the store, it usually smells good, but this is at the cost of putting chemicals on your clothes, not to mention the money out of pocket you are paying for a pre-packaged items.   So, by making your own fabric softener is not only extremely cheap, it’s also easy and safe.   To make your own you will need:

3 c. distilled white vinegar
15-20 drops essential oil-whichever smell you like
¼ c. rubbing alcohol

Once you get all of your ingredients measured out, pour the vinegar in a quart-size jar, then add the essential oil,  then the rubbing alcohol.  I love to use lavender essential oil, because it’s calming and soothing and I love the scent.  Did you know Lavender oil is antibacterial?
Just throw in about 4 TBS in the fabric softener or rinse compartment, and fill it up the rest of the way with water.  It cost me about $2.00 to make the entire jar.  You probably already have all if not some of the ingredients on hand already.
**NOTE***Vinegar not only softens laundry, it removes soap residue from your clothes, eliminates static cling, and makes towels more absorbent!

Naturally Safe Household Cleaning Products

Ever wonder what household items you can use that are safe and that you can use to clean your house?  Well, there are many inexpensive, easy-to-use natural alternatives which can safely be used in place of commercial household products. Here is a list of common, environmentally safe products which can be used alone or in combination for a wealth of household applications.

  • Baking Soda – cleans, deodorizes, softens water, scours.
  • Soap – unscented soap in liquid form, flakes, powders or bars is biodegradable and will clean just about anything. Avoid using soaps which contain petroleum distillates.
  • Lemon – one of the strongest food-acids, effective against most household bacteria.
  • Borax – (sodium borate) cleans, deodorizes, disinfects, softens water, cleans wallpaper, painted walls and floors.
  • White Vinegar – cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up.
  • Washing Soda – or SAL Soda is sodium carbonate decahydrate, a mineral. Washing soda cuts grease, removes stains, softens water, cleans wall, tiles, sinks and tubs. Use care, as washing soda can irritate mucous membranes. Do not use on aluminum.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol - is an excellent disinfectant. (It has been suggested to replace this with ethanol or 100 proof alcohol in solution with water. There is some indication that isopropyl alcohol buildup contributes to illness in the body.
  • Cornstarch - can be used to clean windows, polish furniture, shampoo carpets and rugs.
  • Citrus Solvent – cleans paint brushes, oil and grease, some stains. (Citrus solvent may cause skin, lung or eye irritations for people with multiple chemical sensitivities

Make at Home Deodorizing Disks

Here is a quick, easy and cheap way to make your own Deodorizing Disks that you can put almost anywhere

Ingredients:

2 cups baking soda
1 – 2 cups distilled water (or you can boil your water for 10 minutes.)
Lavender essential oil or whatever oil you choose.
Silicone mold or muffin pan

Directions:  Add a 3 to 4 drops of essential oil to approximately 1/2 cup water. Pour the water/oil mixture into the baking soda and mix well. Continue to add water until you have a THICK paste.  Divide the mixture into your molds or muffin tin cups.

Let them dry 24 to 48 hours until completely hardened.  If not left long enough to dry, they will crumble.  So be patient.

Plus you can reuse the disk in your laundry after the smell is gone  to help deodorize it as well, just crumble it into a load of laundry.

Make Your Own Sented Plug In

HomeBudgetIdeas.com IDEA #48: DIY Wallflowers Scented Plugin

Hi, Jen here from HomeBudgetIdeas.com.  Here is another great way to save money.   This post is about how to make your own Wallflowers Sented Plugins.  Did you know that all plugin air fresheners have something called  VOC in them.  VOC stands for “volatile organic compounds” and they are highly toxic!  They are basically chemicals with a low boiling point.

VOC cause all sorts of problems in your body such as infertility , headaches, nervous system disorders, memory loss and even cancer for both you and your pets.

This is a cheap do it yourself way to replace the bad stuff they fill the bottles with and add your own good stuff that you know if not bad for you.  OK here’s how you do it:

1.)  Remove the wick part and empty and rinse out the bulb

2.)  Pick some essential oil, like orange, lavender, cinnamon, clary sage, rose, jasmine or what ever sent you like and pour the oil into the bulb

3.)  Fill it up about 1/3 of the way or more depending on how long you want it to work.

4.)  Then fill the rest of the bulb with water, but not to the top or else inserting the wick with make it spill. then put the wick back in the bulb.  Then screw it back into the plug and enjoy the refreshing clean non toxic sent in your home.
